REAL LIFE; ‘My whole family had plastic surgery’
Sunday Mirror, Oct 10, 2004 by Words: Nicola Pittam.
A plastic surgery make-over turned into a family affair when five members of the same family had plastic surgery. From the 78-year-old grandmother to the 28-year-old granddaughter, all five women had dramatic cosmetic enhancement. The family appeared on American TV show The View to show off their new looks and the audience whooped at the staggering results. Between them the family spent pounds 50,000 on their nips and tucks – but that was after the women received a hefty family discount…
Rita Whelan, 59
It all started when Rita of North Reading, Massachusetts, lost her husband in February. He’d suffered a lengthy illness and the ordeal took its toll on Rita physically, as well as emotionally, and she was left looking tired and drained. That’s when she got in touch with Dr Sheldon Sevinor, a surgeon at Union Hospital. She was already acquainted with Dr Sevinor as, in 2001, she had an upper eyelid lift and liposuction of the abdomen, hips, buttocks and thighs – which took her from a size 12 to a size 6. ‘When I first decided to do this, I’d just become a widow and was looking drained. I wanted something to make me feel good,’ she says. By March, Rita was on the operating table for a face and neck lift and lip enhancements. But she didn’t have to go through it alone. Her talk of nipping and tucking sparked so much interest from members of her family, that her mother, sister and two nieces all ended up under the knife – in the same week.
Rita says: ‘I feel like I took 10 years off my life. The strangest part is, people I know keep coming up to me, telling me how fabulous I look, but they can’t figure out what I had done. It makes you feel so good. It was a fabulous recovery and I’ve had no complaints and no pain. I would definitely do it again.’
Cost before discount: pounds 25,000
Grace D’Amore, 79
(Rita’s mum)
Grace had a face lift, neck lift, arm lift and a facial peel (which Dr Sevinor describes as ‘the best-kept secret in America’). It was her older daughter Rita who suggested the treatment. ‘My mother is a very beautiful woman,’ says Rita. ‘I told her she would look fabulous if she had her face done.’ And, as the pictures show, Rita was right. But Grandma Grace didn’t need much persuasion. ‘I had no reservations about going under the knife,’ she said, now wrinkle- free.
Grace: ‘We want to go on vacation together to show off our new looks. We feel fantastic.’
Cost before discount: pounds 25,000
Joanne Termine, 53
(Rita’s sister and Grace’s younger daughter)
Rita’s younger sister Joanne decided she wanted to do what her big sister had previously done and opted for totally resculpting her body. After consulting Dr Sevinor, she opted for liposuction on her stomach, hips and back. Joanne had a staggering 11 litres of fat liposuctioned out of her body. She has now also dropped from a size 18 to a trim size 12 and lost a total of 2st 2lbs after also sticking to a strict diet and exercise programme after having the surgery.
Joanne: ‘I’m delighted. The results are totally amazing.’
Cost before discount: pounds 7,000
Erika Termine, 30,
and Danielle Termine, 28 (Joanne’s daughters)
Erika and Danielle both had lipo on the abdomen and hip area. Erika, who had 5 litres of fat removed from her body, also had a breast lift. Dr Sevinor said the women only opted for lipo once dieting failed to achieve desired results. ‘Both Erika and Danielle had a predisposition to fat on their hips and no matter how much they dieted and exercised they couldn’t shift it,’ he said.
Erika: ‘I’d do it again tomorrow.’
Danielle: ‘I’ve lost 10lbs and I was back at work two days after surgery.’
Cost before discount: Erika pounds 12,500 Danielle pounds 6,000
COST BEFORE THE FAMILY DISCOUNT: pounds 78,000
WHAT THEY PAID: pounds 50,000
TOTAL SAVING: pounds 28,000
Surgeon Dr Sheldon Sevinor:
‘The women all look amazing. I couldn’t be more satisfied with the results,’ he says.
But Dr Sevinor, who is certified by the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery, warns that nipping and tucking isn’t always the answer. ‘Plastic surgery is not a quick fix,’ he warns. Although he admits sometimes it’s the only way. But when his patients undergo liposuction he expects them to help themselves as well. ‘Joanne did it the right way – she also dieted and exercised and after the liposuction lost 2st 2lbs. She’s done so well,’ he says of his patient. ‘Everyone recovers at a different rate but Erika and Danielle’s liposuction was not as major as Joanne’s, which is why they recovered much quicker.’
