TV 2009 Best Kept Secrets
Kids & Parents Plastic Surgery:
Channel 7 in Boston- Healthcast Report- August 2010 -Reported by: Christa Delcamp/Producer: Jodi Parrish
We all inherit certain traits from our parents, and sometimes that’s not always a good thing, see how one new trend in plastic surgery has kids and parents getting the same procedure to change what nature gave them.
Seventeen-year-old Meghan of Hopkinton had her Mom’s nose, and she wanted to change that. Meghan, wanted her nose fixed.”When you look in the mirror, that’s what you see, like I look in the mirror and I just see my nose”. It’s something Mom, Debra understood all too well. Debra, Meghan’s mom “So for many many years I did nothing about it, until about 10 years ago, I couldn’t live with it anymore and I decided to have my nose done”. And now her daughter is doing the same! Plastic surgeons say they see this a lot.
Dr. Sheldon Sevinor, plastic surgeon: “A new trend in my practice is parents having a surgical procedure and then their children having the same procedure either at the same time or at a later date”. But Doctors caution just because its good for the adult, doesn’t always make it ok for the child.
Dr. Sheldon Sevinor, plastic surgeon “This is surgery, this is serious business, this isn’t like going to have your hair cut in a salon”. “I feel that there’s too much plastic surgery going on for the wrong reasons, as well as a lot of plastic surgery going on in teenagers that are not appropriate candidates”. In Meghan’s case, she says she’s doing it to correct a problem that’s affected her confidence. Meghan, wanted her nose fixed “I don’t want to look like a movie star, I don’t care what anyone thinks , I just want to look the way that makes me feel the most confident”. And her Mom stands by her decision. Debra, Meghan’s mom “I support her totally, because if its going to make her feel better, then that’s what she should do”. And her Doctor agrees. Dr. Sheldon Sevinor, plastic surgeon “That’s the goal in plastic surgery, is to make people feel better about themselves to give them more confidence and self esteem, but at the same time, they have to be happy in their own skin”. And remember, cosmetic surgery is still surgery, so make sure to schedule a consultation and really discuss why you want a specific procedure and all of your options to ensure it’s the right thing for you, and that you are doing it for the right reasons.

Plastic Surgeon Operates on Five Women in One Family
As Seen on Oprah and The View!
One particular Monday-through-Friday work week was a tad different during March, 2004, for Sheldon Sevinor, M.D., a board-certified plastic surgeon near Boston. Dr. Sevinor operated on five women in the same family ranging in age from 24 to 79 during that week, doing one surgery apiece each day on the family membersThe ultimate family togetherness experience actually began several years ago when married couples started asking Dr. Sevinor to do plastic surgery on them together.
“Various surgeons become known for different things,” Dr. Sevinor told CosmeticSurgery.com News. “I tend to attract many couples because I understand how nobody but a family member can relate to a person who is bothered by an overlarge nose, an overweight area of his or her body or some other bothersome feature.”
For instance, one very successful owner of a real estate firm married a size four woman. But after three children and three C-sections in ten years, the petite woman had increased to a size 14 and was changing her clothes in the dark because her stomach hung far below her belt line and her breasts had lost all their firmness and were resting on her stomach.
“Eventually, she had a tummy tuck, breast lift and breast augmentation, partly because her husband wanted the best of everything for her, including a good self-image,” Dr. Sevinor says.
The man was overjoyed when he saw the difference a surgical rejuvenation made in his wife’s confidence so he started thinking about the effect his thrice broken nose was having on his own personality.
“The man had a weak chin, was a boxer in college and his nose showed it,” Dr. Sevinor says. “He did not feel good in his own skin so he was soon having a rhinoplasty– which also improved some breathing problems – and a chin augmentation.”
The couple took their dressings off about the same time and was just mesmerized with each other’s enhancements, the doctor says. That was ten years ago and the couple still meets with Dr. Sevinor every Christmas. Later, Oprah Winfrey invited the doctor and four other couples who had cosmetic procedures onto her show. Still later, Dr. Sevinor made the rounds at “Inside Edition,” “Sally Jesse Raphael,” “Geraldo,” “Good Morning America.”
Once the television shows were widely seen, more couples made appointments and went under Dr. Sevinor’s knife together. He says it usually starts when the wife asks for a surgical rejuvenation. The husband then sees the process is usually much smoother than he imagined so he also springs for his own enhancements.
Then, in 2004, 59-year-old Rita Whelan became a widow and thought back on the surgery she had with Dr. Sevinor four years ago. Drained by her husband’s illness and death, she made another appointment to discuss a face and neck lift and a lip augmentation.
“I was very pleased with the procedures I had before,” says Rita. “So I decided to take along my 79-year-old-mother, Grace D’Amore, because she had always talked about getting a face lift.”
Talk about the various procedures in cosmetic surgery swirled around the family. So it wasn’t very long before Rita’s sister, then 53-year-old Joann Termine, asked the doctor about liposuction. On the heels of that, Joanne’s two daughters, Erika and Danielle, made appointments to ask about the surgical rejuvenations they had in mind.
“All this goes beyond a breast augmentation or some liposuction,” Dr. Sevinor says. “Just like with husbands and wives, it’s more a case of sharing your lives together and supporting each other during a crucial time.”
Additionally, the doctor thinks it’s now more permissible to have plastic surgery which is no longer considered pure vanity. He additionally tells his patients the surgery can change the way you look at life and the way people look at you. From where Dr. Sevinor sits, he sees that his women patients have been such devoted caretakers of other family members, they are used to putting themselves last when it comes to providing something extra nice.
“But that trend is lessening,” Dr. Sevinor says. “More women, supported by husbands and other family members, are giving themselves permission to be good to themselves, too.”
After the “Fab Five” had completed their surgical enhancements, the total surgeries were:
*Grace D’Amore: face and neck lift, partial chemical peel and arm lift.
*Rita Whelan: face and neck lift and a “luscious lips” filler injection.
*Joann Termine: liposuction of the stomach hips and back.
*30-year-old Erika: breast lift and liposuction of the abdomen and hips.
*27-year-old Danielle: liposuction of the stomach and hips.
While all the women ended up feeling better about their appearances, the family matriarchs, Grace D’Amore, was telling everyone she now felt like one of T.V. Swan’s contestants and that several men in her neighborhood now notice her and ask for coffee.
“And that really makes me feel good,” says Grace.

REAL LIFE; ‘My whole family had plastic surgery’
Sunday Mirror, Oct 10, 2004 by Words: Nicola Pittam.
- A plastic surgery make-over turned into a family affair when five members of the same family had plastic surgery. From the 78-year-old grandmother to the 28-year-old granddaughter, all five women had dramatic cosmetic enhancement. The family appeared on American TV show The View to show off their new looks and the audience whooped at the staggering results. Between them the family spent pounds 50,000 on their nips and tucks – but that was after the women received a hefty family discount…
Rita Whelan, 59
It all started when Rita of North Reading, Massachusetts, lost her husband in February. He’d suffered a lengthy illness and the ordeal took its toll on Rita physically, as well as emotionally, and she was left looking tired and drained. That’s when she got in touch with Dr Sheldon Sevinor, a surgeon at Union Hospital. She was already acquainted with Dr Sevinor as, in 2001, she had an upper eyelid lift and liposuction of the abdomen, hips, buttocks and thighs – which took her from a size 12 to a size 6. ‘When I first decided to do this, I’d just become a widow and was looking drained. I wanted something to make me feel good,’ she says. By March, Rita was on the operating table for a face and neck lift and lip enhancements. But she didn’t have to go through it alone. Her talk of nipping and tucking sparked so much interest from members of her family, that her mother, sister and two nieces all ended up under the knife – in the same week.
Rita says: ‘I feel like I took 10 years off my life. The strangest part is, people I know keep coming up to me, telling me how fabulous I look, but they can’t figure out what I had done. It makes you feel so good. It was a fabulous recovery and I’ve had no complaints and no pain. I would definitely do it again.’
Cost before discount: pounds 25,000
Grace D’Amore, 79
(Rita’s mum)
Grace had a face lift, neck lift, arm lift and a facial peel (which Dr Sevinor describes as ‘the best-kept secret in America’). It was her older daughter Rita who suggested the treatment. ‘My mother is a very beautiful woman,’ says Rita. ‘I told her she would look fabulous if she had her face done.’ And, as the pictures show, Rita was right. But Grandma Grace didn’t need much persuasion. ‘I had no reservations about going under the knife,’ she said, now wrinkle- free.
Grace: ‘We want to go on vacation together to show off our new looks. We feel fantastic.’
Cost before discount: pounds 25,000
Joanne Termine, 53
(Rita’s sister and Grace’s younger daughter)
Rita’s younger sister Joanne decided she wanted to do what her big sister had previously done and opted for totally resculpting her body. After consulting Dr Sevinor, she opted for liposuction on her stomach, hips and back. Joanne had a staggering 11 litres of fat liposuctioned out of her body. She has now also dropped from a size 18 to a trim size 12 and lost a total of 2st 2lbs after also sticking to a strict diet and exercise programme after having the surgery.
Joanne: ‘I’m delighted. The results are totally amazing.’
Cost before discount: pounds 7,000
Erika Termine, 30,
and Danielle Termine, 28 (Joanne’s daughters)
Erika and Danielle both had lipo on the abdomen and hip area. Erika, who had 5 litres of fat removed from her body, also had a breast lift. Dr Sevinor said the women only opted for lipo once dieting failed to achieve desired results. ‘Both Erika and Danielle had a predisposition to fat on their hips and no matter how much they dieted and exercised they couldn’t shift it,’ he said.
Erika: ‘I’d do it again tomorrow.’
Danielle: ‘I’ve lost 10lbs and I was back at work two days after surgery.’
Cost before discount: Erika pounds 12,500 Danielle pounds 6,000
COST BEFORE THE FAMILY DISCOUNT: pounds 78,000
WHAT THEY PAID: pounds 50,000
TOTAL SAVING: pounds 28,000
Surgeon Dr Sheldon Sevinor:
‘The women all look amazing. I couldn’t be more satisfied with the results,’ he says.
But Dr Sevinor, who is certified by the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery, warns that nipping and tucking isn’t always the answer. ‘Plastic surgery is not a quick fix,’ he warns. Although he admits sometimes it’s the only way. But when his patients undergo liposuction he expects them to help themselves as well. ‘Joanne did it the right way – she also dieted and exercised and after the liposuction lost 2st 2lbs. She’s done so well,’ he says of his patient. ‘Everyone recovers at a different rate but Erika and Danielle’s liposuction was not as major as Joanne’s, which is why they recovered much quicker.’
